Oil and Natural Gas Industry’s Role In Coastal Sustainability to be Highlighted at State of the Coast Conference

The New Orleans Geological Society (NOGS) is pleased to announce its participation in the upcoming State of the Coast Conference (May 30 – June 1), which will highlight the role of the oil and gas industry in coastal sustainability.  Multiple conference sessions and technical presentations will be coordinated or moderated by NOGS members.  The session titled “Cooperative Engagement of the Oil and Gas Industry in Coastal Sustainability Planning” was coordinated by NOGS and will feature Dr. Sarah Connick, Environment Team Lead at Chevron, Mr. Phil Precht, Director of Coastal Wetlands at ConocoPhillips, and Mr. Donnie Garrison, Operations Manager for Shell Pipeline.

The session “Integrating Subsurface Geology and Geophysics into Coastal Resiliency” will be moderated by NOGS member Dr. Elizabeth McDade, and NOGS member Mr. David Culpepper will moderate the session “Geological Underpinnings of Coastal Land Loss and Subsidence”.  Several technical presentations in these sessions by graduate students and faculty from UNO, Tulane and ULL will be based on interpretations of oil and gas industry 3-D seismic data.  Over the past 5 years over $200 million worth of industry seismic data has been made available to local universities to study coastal processes including wetlands loss.

NOGS will also jointly present a poster session with the Louisiana Geological Survey on the Coastal Geohazards Atlas, which is currently in development.

The New Orleans Geological Society was organized on October 3, 1941, as a non-profit organization for the purpose of facilitating the development of the profession and science of Geology, with specific emphasis to exploration and production of petroleum and natural gas.  Please contact Chris McLindon at chris_mclindon@att.net for more details.
